Why We Exist

Social mobility is a bigger problem in the UK than any other developed country. The top of many professions is dominated by those educated at private schools - 74% of judges, 71% of barristers, 51% of journalists went to schools that educate only 7% of the population.
While more students then ever from less-advantaged backgrounds are now going to university, this has not translated to an increase in the number successfully securing roles on competitive graduate programmes at leading firms - the gateway to a successful career.
Research shows that non-selective state schools educate almost 90% of the population, yet account for only 30% of those on graduate schemes at some top employers. 70% of those on some graduate schemes are from fee-paying or selective schools.
In April 2016, the IFS showed that graduates from lower income households earn 10% less than those from higher income households studying the same course at the same university. The gap widens to 17% lower amongst high earners.
The reasons for this are many. upReach works to improve social mobility by creating the conditions for undergraduates from less advantaged backgrounds to access and sustain top graduate jobs.

Theory of Change

upReach’s vision is of a society in which everybody has an equal opportunity to realise their full career potential, regardless of social background.

Socio-economic disadvantage continues to be the most significant driver of inequality in terms of access to and outcomes from higher education.

We take a ‘double benefit’ approach to address the social mobility challenge.

We help young people achieve their career potential by providing an intensive programme of support that addresses socio-economic barriers to employment.

We also work to influence the hiring behaviours of top organisations so that a commitment to equal opportunity permeates their organisational culture and they recognise the social and economic value of greater diversity within their workforce.

Impact

Founded in 2012, we supported an initial cohort of 39 Associates. Following steady growth, in 2016/17 we are now working with over 600 Associates, and have plans to work with 1000 within two years.

Those with graduate roles started on a mean average salary of £25,553, over £3,500 more than the average graduate.
We estimate our Associates were on average five times more likely to secure a role with our partner employers than an average applicant.
Of upReach Associates who graduated in 2015, 88% secured a graduate role or an internship

Our expertise is supporting upReach Associates to access top jobs in:
